Anybody outthere interested in the Oscar-Show tonight?
I don't think awards of that kind say something about the quality but still I like to watch them. Especially the Oscars. And this year some of the movies are political and critical. (that's something for Hollywood) My favourites are "Good Night and good Luck", a brilliant impression of the McCarthy-era, and "Darwins Nightmare", a documentary done by Hubert Sauper, in which he deals with Globalization and the effects. It's a shame Cache wasn't allowed to participate. It's not like Haneke needs the Academy and the USA, but it's the best european movie of 2005 and so at least some Americans would see how european mainstreamcinema works. (in contrast to Hollywood)

I'm, too, very interested in the Oscars, but this year I couldn't watch any of the nominated movies. And as we don't have Pro7, I couldn't watch the show, anyway.
So, this year I'm still quite interested, but I know very little of the nomations. Perhaps I watch it on monday on ORF.

The Oscars are awarded and there, as I can read in an derstandard.at-article some surprises. For example did "Godd Night and Good Luck" not succeed in any of the six nominated categories, but George Clooney won the prize as best actor in a supporting role. Another rather big surprise was that "Brokeback Mountain" lost against "L.A. Crash" as best movie and did only win three of the statuettes for eight nominations. etoile, did you watch the show live on Pro7? How was the presenter John Stewart?

I watched it. The show was okay- not as boring as usual. But the outcome seems so typical american. First "Oh look how many critical and really good movies we have nominated. They deal with things such as oilcompanys, McCarthy and gay americans. Wohooo, the Reps won't like this but WE are artists and have to talk about such things blabla" And then a documentary about some stupid birds (the only non critical doc) wins and best movie ist the one everybody can agree with. It deals with things such as racism against black people, but also against white people und wants to say that every person may have a reason to act in that way in this situation. The movie is very predictable and in the end tells us nothing controversal. I haven't seen all of the nominees. In fact I have seen Crash and Good Night and Good Luck. But the second is way better and gives an frightining impression of how self-censorship works, because that was what McCarthy achieved- people censored themselfs to spek not against him and so in favor for communism. Reminds very much on quotes like "Thos who are not with us are against us". And gay cowboys- hey that is one of the best ideas since of movies and the USA- teh Reps are freaking out. But so it reminds us that the Oscars are the Oscars and not as Cesar or golden bear or a golden palm or a golden lion. They are a really big fashion show, where some harmless people, everybody can agree on, win some shiny things. Peace and love.

Okay, it could have been predicted. Hollywood loves movies about racism and is always anxious to state that everybody has to be treated the same way. Reminds of the year, when the winners were Halle Berry and Denzel Washington - I had the impression, they just won it, because they were afro-americans. But as you said in your first post: It's just the Oscars - nice show, but nothing behind it

Well as long as europe knows that movies are art and they shall be controversial and critical it's okay. Better than the other way round and things like Cache, darwins nightmare and so on would only be shown in the USA. More important than what Hollywood says is in the end what Berlin, Venice, Cannes and Paris say.

More important than what Hollywood says is in the end what Berlin, Venice, Cannes and Paris say. That's right, and sometimes it seems, that everybody knows that, except The Academy. Even well-known Hollywood-Stars emphasise the meaning of the golden palm or the golden lion more than the oscars - well at least it seems so. It's a pity that there are also many good movies that come from Hollywood, but that they are not honored there, too, but only in europe. Kind of strange to me...
